Key takeaways

  1. The offers come in three shapes: a free year (Customer.io, DailyStory, fromHello), credits (PostHog's $50,000 for 12 months) or a discount that steps down (HubSpot and Intercom over three years, ActiveCampaign for one).

  2. Among the free years, Customer.io's covers the most: up to 30,000 profiles for companies that have raised under $10M, with no age limit. It asks for a credit card.

  3. The gates decide first: funding caps run from $1M (ActiveCampaign) to $10M (Customer.io, Intercom), age limits from 12 months (DailyStory) to two years, and ActiveCampaign requires an incubator.

  4. Read the exit before you apply: discounts end at list price, Customer.io makes a discounted graduation offer, PostHog moves you to a regular plan, and fromHello's Core continues month-to-month from €39 a month excluding VAT.

How to choose

Four checks, in the order they rule programs out.

  1. Start with the gates

Age, funding and partner rules end most applications before the benefits matter. Under 12 months old, DailyStory is open; in an incubator with up to $1M raised, ActiveCampaign. Past two years, Customer.io (under $10M raised), HubSpot (up to Series A) and Intercom (under 15 people) still are.

  2. Count what the meter counts

Customer.io counts profiles, people and objects together; DailyStory active contacts; fromHello contacts; Intercom seats and messages; PostHog bills usage against credits. Size your list a year out, not today.

  3. Read the exit first

A discount that steps down ends at list price, and an annual commitment holds you to it. Check what the vendor states for month 13: a graduation offer, a regular plan or month-to-month pricing.

  4. Match the channels

Customer.io sends email, SMS and push; PostHog Workflows email and SMS; DailyStory leaves SMS out of the free year; fromHello sends through your own email and SMS providers. A free year on the wrong channels ends in a migration.

The shortlist

A startup program trades a year of software for the hope that you stay. This page compares seven, from vendors of marketing automation and customer engagement tools, on what each vendor publishes: who qualifies, what you get, how many contacts it covers and what happens when it ends. To compare the platforms rather than the offers, see our roundup of customer engagement platforms for startups. fromHello's own terms are on its startup program page.

How we chose

We kept programs whose terms the vendor publishes on its own site, opened every program page on 12 October 2026, and report eligibility and benefits as each vendor states them, never from a perk marketplace. Programs without published terms are listed after the shortlist, with the reason. The order groups the offers by shape, free years, then credits, then discounts, and ranks nothing. We run one of these programs, so fromHello is listed last and held to the same standard.

  1. Customer.io

    Proprietary (SaaS)

    Best for

Startups that have raised under $10M and want a year of event-triggered email, SMS and push on an established platform, at no cost.

    Strengths

    • Up to 12 months free with up to 30,000 profiles (people and objects count together) on all Essentials features, including Journeys, Data Pipelines and its AI Agent.
    • No age limit: you qualify with under $10M raised, no purchased lists and no past Customer.io account, and you can apply during a trial.
    • Graduates get a discounted offer before standard pricing, and more than 150 accelerators, venture firms and founder communities pass the program on to their companies.

    Watch-outs

    • A credit card is required for every account; profiles above 30,000 bill at $0.007 each, and the plan comes with limited support.
    • New customers only, and the free term starts after a 14-day trial. Closed source and cloud-only.
  2. DailyStory

    Proprietary (SaaS)

    Best for

Companies in their first year that want email marketing automation free for twelve months, with some consulting.

    Strengths

    • 10,000 active contacts a month free for 12 months, which DailyStory values at $150 a month.
    • Unlimited users and API access, every native integration, and support by chat, email and phone.
    • Up to an hour of digital consulting a month, plus DailyStory's marketing guides.

    Watch-outs

    • Only companies in business for less than 12 months qualify, the tightest age limit on this page.
    • SMS is not in the free program (it needs 10DLC registration and per-message fees), and the page doesn't say what happens after the year.
  3. PostHog

    MIT core

    Best for

Product teams that want analytics, session replay, feature flags and lifecycle messaging on one platform, paid with credits for a year.

    Strengths

    • $50,000 in credits for 12 months, plus more than $12,000 in partner perks.
    • Credits pay for most of the platform, Workflows included: it sends email and SMS and calls webhooks when product events fire.
    • Workflows also has a free monthly allowance, the first 10,000 emails, then from $0.003 per email.

    Watch-outs

    • You apply from a paid plan, billed on usage, with a company email domain, and since 14 September 2026 credits no longer pay for PostHog's AI tools.
    • PostHog's own feature table shows no push channel in Workflows, and startup accounts get normal-priority support with no account manager.
  4. HubSpot

    Proprietary (SaaS)

    Best for

Pre-seed to Series A startups that want CRM, marketing automation and sales tools in one suite and can commit a year at a time.

    Strengths

    • 90% off the first year, 50% off the second and 25% off the third, through an approved partner or with verified venture funding.
    • A second tier through approved entrepreneurial organizations: 30% off the first year and 15% off the second.
    • More than 4,000 approved partners, and HubSpot can verify funding through Crunchbase, Harmonic or Pitchbook.

    Watch-outs

    • A discount, not a free year: it applies to net-new Professional or Enterprise products only, with an annual commitment.
    • The 90% tier stops before Series B, and standard HubSpot pricing applies once the discount period ends.
  5. Intercom

    Proprietary (SaaS)

    Best for

Startups under 15 people that want a support helpdesk and an AI agent first, with some proactive messaging.

    Strengths

    • 93% off the first year, 50% off the second and 25% off the third, with the helpdesk from $65 a month.
    • Fin AI Agent free for the first year: 300 outcomes and 15 lead qualifications a month.
    • 6 Advanced seats, 6 Copilot seats and 20 Lite seats, plus Proactive Support Plus with 500 messages sent a month.

    Watch-outs

    • Built for customer service first: proactive messages stop at 500 a month, and phone, SMS and WhatsApp are charged at list price.
    • Fewer than 15 employees and up to $10M raised; the year-two and year-three discounts apply only if you stay on the program.
  6. ActiveCampaign

    Proprietary (SaaS)

    Best for

Incubated startups under two years old that want ActiveCampaign's email marketing and automation on an annual plan.

    Strengths

    • 90% off any ActiveCampaign annual plan for the first year.
    • Incubator alumni still qualify for 12 months after leaving their program.
    • Automations triggered by customer actions, a CRM and on-site messages, on one platform.

    Watch-outs

    • The tightest gates on this page: under two years old, no more than $1M raised, and an incubator, current or within the past 12 months.
    • Annual plans only, full price from the second year, and the offer is at ActiveCampaign's sole discretion.
  7. fromHello

    AGPL-3.0Cloud in early access

    Best for

Startups under two years old, funded or bootstrapped, that want journeys triggered by what people do, on code they can self-host.

    Strengths

    • 12 months of Core at no charge, up to 20,000 contacts and unlimited seats, with hands-on help to connect your email provider, add tracking and launch a first journey.
    • Two criteria, age and funding, so bootstrapped companies can apply too, and the year starts when your workspace opens, not when you apply.
    • After the year, Core continues month-to-month at its normal price, €39 to €139 a month excluding VAT depending on contacts; or self-host it free under AGPL-3.0.

    Watch-outs

    • Smaller than Customer.io's program: 20,000 contacts against 30,000 profiles, a €5M funding cap against $10M, and an age limit Customer.io doesn't set.
    • Core sends through your own email and SMS providers, who bill you directly, and fromHello Cloud is in early access through the waitlist, with spots opening in stages.

Often mentioned, not on the shortlist

These come up in searches for startup programs. Each is left out because its terms could not be checked on the vendor's own site on 12 October 2026.

  • Braze (opens in a new tab)

Its startup page offers free access through Braze's VC partners and asks you to get in touch to check eligibility; it publishes no length, limits or criteria.

  • Brevo (opens in a new tab)

Its startups and VCs program offers partners exclusive discounts for their members, with no published discount, length or criteria. Perk sites quote figures Brevo's own page doesn't.

  • CleverTap (opens in a new tab)

Its Leap program gives participants and alumni of its startup growth partners a discount on the CleverTap for Startups plan; the docs state neither the amount nor the length.

  • MoEngage

Startup terms for MoEngage circulate on third-party perk sites, but we found no program page on MoEngage's own site to confirm them.

  • Ortto

Its startup program page returned a 404 when we checked, so its terms can't be confirmed.

  • Inflection (opens in a new tab)

Announced a free year for startups using Segment in July 2022; its current pricing page doesn't mention the offer, and its startups link leads to a demo request.

FAQ

Common questions

  • Which marketing automation tools have a startup program?

Of the vendors we checked on 12 October 2026, Customer.io, DailyStory, PostHog, HubSpot, Intercom, ActiveCampaign and fromHello publish their terms. Braze, Brevo and CleverTap route startup offers through partners without public terms, and Klaviyo and Loops offer free plans rather than a program.

  • Which startup program gives the most for free?

It depends on what you count. Among the free years, Customer.io's covers the most: up to 12 months and 30,000 profiles. PostHog gives the largest sum, $50,000 in credits over 12 months, spread across its products. fromHello covers 20,000 contacts on Core, and DailyStory 10,000 active contacts a month.

  • Do I need an accelerator or a VC to qualify?

Sometimes. ActiveCampaign requires an incubator, current or within the past 12 months. HubSpot's 90% tier needs an approved partner or verified venture funding, and its 30% tier an approved entrepreneurial organization. Braze offers free access only through its VC partners. Customer.io, Intercom, PostHog, DailyStory and fromHello set criteria such as funding, age or team size that you can meet on your own.

  • What happens when a startup program ends?

Check before you apply, because it varies. Customer.io makes a discounted graduation offer before standard pricing. HubSpot and Intercom step their discounts down over three years, and Intercom's later years apply only if you stay on the program. ActiveCampaign charges full price from year two, PostHog moves you to another plan, and fromHello's Core continues month-to-month from €39 a month excluding VAT. DailyStory's page doesn't say.

  • Do startup programs require a credit card?

Customer.io requires one for every account and charges it only for profiles above 30,000 or when you continue on a paid plan. PostHog asks you to sign up to a paid plan, billed on usage, before you apply. The other program pages we checked, fromHello's included, don't mention one.

  • Is there an open-source option with a startup program?

fromHello is open source under AGPL-3.0: its startup program covers Core on fromHello Cloud, in early access, and self-hosting is free on servers you run. Most of PostHog's code is MIT-licensed, outside its ee/ directory, and its startup credits apply to PostHog Cloud.

  • How does fromHello's startup program compare?

It is smaller than Customer.io's: 20,000 contacts instead of 30,000 profiles, a €5M funding cap instead of $10M, and a two-year age limit. Its year starts when your workspace opens, not when you apply. Core sends through your own email and SMS providers, and fromHello Cloud is in early access. See the startup program.
